Walking further, we come to a newer section of road, elevated and jutting out over the river. Here are some great views of river and the far bank. Sadly, the vista is very hazy. Photo opportunities are limited.
A short meander still further down the road and a quick right and left, is a statue of the much revered, King Rama V. This sight celebrates his journey to Tha Chalom and the establishment of this area as a district in 1905.

Situated just to the side from the statue, is Wat Suttiwat Wararam (Wat Chonglom). A stunning piece of architecture. It is quite deserted, which is a bit strange for a weekend. An interesting feature is the Buddha image inside with sunglasses. The only one in Thailand, I believe.
After absorbing the majesty of the Temple and it’s wonderful murals on it’s walls, we pass through the back entrance of the Wat's grounds, and across the busy road to Phra Pothisat Kuan Im Park. I was unable to locate much information on this landmark. Perhaps it's most distinctive feature is the very tall, female Buddha image. I believe it represents the Goddess of Compassion, Mercy and Kindness, Bodhisattva Guam Yin.
We spent an extended time here allowing the stragglers to regroup. Nice, relaxing and tranquil atmosphere.
Next, we followed the what appeared as long unused railway tracks. Surprisingly, these form part of the second line of the Maeklong Railway. As we strolled, we passed some ship building yards where the more adventurous tried to enter the dock area for better shots, but these attempts were turned away by zealous staff. During this trek, the group became separated and the people I was with decided to continue back to ferry.
After a brief time waiting for stragglers, we crossed river to our jump off point. Lunch at a seafood restaurant located just near the ferry pier. I was informed the food is excellent, but I was not all that hungry. I decided on a salted fried rice dish, and well deserved beer. Good conversation of things seen and missed opportunities for some. Bit like the fish that got away stories.
After lunch, we caught return train at 12:15pm. Wanting to sit back and relax a bit, I tried to buy a second class with air conditioning. I bought the ticket for 25 baht, and proceeded to the train. On board I could find the second class carriage. Asking a conductor, he laughed and said sit here, point to the closest vacant seat. Seems there are not any such carriages, even though I could buy the ticket. Ripped off!
During the train ride, I was able to talk at length with Andy. A German, who had spent 25 years plus in Australia. He told me of his life in Byron Bay and his vision of a community style farm he had built there. More than just interesting. We spoke for the majority of the trip. A nice guy. He gave me his email when interested of my plan for assisting some up country school in the new year.
Arriving at Wong Wian Yai station, a quick goodbye, then the short walk to Wong Wian Yai BTS station. On the platform, I was greeted by many of the group who had chosen the same transport option.
All in all, a day well spent. Some new friends, photo shoots, and some experimentation with my camera. I will be going on another of these type of walks in the future. Stay tuned, I will post a blog as time allows.
